Wheelchair Provision

Different wheelchair sizes taken into consideration

Unless stated to the contrary, any quoted wheelchair capacity for a vehicle is based on a wheelchair size of approximately 1000mm x 600mm (PSV certification requires 900mm x 500mm). However, many of the models offered could accommodate larger wheelchairs without necessarily reducing the stated capacity. Nonetheless, wheelchairs come in many shapes and sizes, and this must be taken into account when the base vehicle is selected. We are always pleased to issue wheelchair layout drawings, for any model, which is of interest.

Latest guidelines from DPTAC say that the first wheelchair space should be 1300mm x 750mm and subsequent spaces 1000mm x 600m.

New Type Approval regulations for minibuses, effective October 2010 or October 2011, dictate a larger size for additional wheelchairs, so 1300mm x 750mm for the first wheelchair and 1300mm x 700mm for all subsequent wheelchairs. In addition certain minimum gangway dimensions are specified. These new regulations will reduce the passenger capacity of all current minibus designs.

Generous lengths of low profile (sunken) tracking are fitted for each wheelchair position. The tracking is fitted in accordance with the VOSA visual inspection standard, which is necessary to achieve PSV COIF

Alternatively, similar low profile tracking may be provided as part of a tested floor system, such as Unwin Innotrax.

Any wheelchair and the wheelchair occupant must be securely restrained.
